Coreline Flushing

June 16, 2026

The Oglala Sioux Rural Water Supply System (OSRWSS) will flush segments of the South Core pipelines staring this week. The goal of the flushing is to remove build-up of naturally occurring particles and sediment from the coreline pipes.

Water system flushing is common in utilities across the United States. The process is essential to the overall preventative maintenance of a distribution system and is an important practice carried out by public drinking water systems to maintain high water quality and ensure proper operation of system hydrants and valves.

During the flushing procedure, WR/LJ members may notice temporary water discoloration. The following are some general guidelines and information if you do notice discolored water.

  • Water will continue to be safe for consumption and daily activities.
  • Bypass home filtering systems and softeners.
  • Run cold water through your system until water runs clear.
  • Ensure water is clear before running the dishwasher or washing clothes.

Again, flushing is a normal and necessary part of maintaining a safe and reliable drinking water supply. If you experience persistent discolored water and it does not clear up, please contact the WR/LJ office at 605-669-2931.
